SHAH ALAM - Officiated by the State Exco for Education, Higher Education and Human Capital Development, Yang Berhormat Puan Dr Hajah Halimah, the opening ceremony of the 2014 Engaged Learning and ICTD in the University Curriculum International Conference saw 120 participants and speakers from 23 countries around the world.

The conference, co-organised by UNISEL and AIDCOM, is a two-day event that takes place at the Concorde Hotel here in Shah Alam. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Anuar Ahmad, AIDCOM Chairman, Datuk Kadir A Jasin and UN-APCICT/ESCAP Director, Dr Hyeun-Suk Rhee were also present for the opening.

As a collaborating partner, Cornell University of New York sent in their team of delegates, including keynote speaker, International Emeritus Prof Dr Royal Colle.

UNISEL was chosen as the first university in Asia by the UN-APCICT/ESCAP (United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Center for ICT for Development) to host the conference, which has only previously been held in Europe.

The first ever EL and ICTD conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland in 2003. Then followed by Tunis, Tunisia in 2005 and Madrid, Spain in 2005.

One of the main highlights of the conference is to discuss ‘Engaged Learning in the University Curriculum’. It encourages students to get more involved with their communities and to give back to society, aligned with the UN’s mission to ameliorate poverty and to provide education for all children.

There are 12 speaker sessions scheduled throughout the conference. Participants are invited to present their papers and hold discussions during the workshop sessions too.

Prof Anuar said in an interview that he plans to improve the university’s own capacity in information technology and communication (ICT).

He explained that the proposed plans have been forwarded onto the Selangor State government and that UNISEL is targeting to start the hybrid learning programme as soon as next year.

“Hybrid learning involves the implementation of at least 30% ICT application in the classroom.

“We hope that the state government will approve our plans soon so we can start improving our ICT infrastructure,” he added.

Prof Anuar also shared some insight into UNISEL’s preparations for its 15th anniversary. He revealed that UNISEL will be organizing many more international events and sending more students overseas for their industrial training.
“These efforts are part of exposing our students to the international community so as to not be left behind.

“UNISEL too awards our graduates with internationally recognized degrees and our ICT plans are in part of making sure we uphold our standard of education by applying it in the curriculum.”
